And, luckily for you, the year I won a one-of-a-kind autographed (in purple Sharpie!) Taylor Swift Guitar from Tiger Beat Magazine. Ugh, remember when that was a thing? What ever happened to teenybopper magazines? Anyways, if you’re curious about the backstory of this precious pop culture artifact, keep reading. (Otherwise, you can skip to the bottom description!).
BACKSTORY: It was a hot, muggy August afternoon in West Virginia. I was 12 years old at an all-girls sleepaway camp, taking a siesta on the top bunk of my cabin. Below me was my best friend, Maddie, who tickled my dangling feet as I attempted to read my favorite tween magazine—Tiger Beat. My jerking movements rustled the pages, flipping towards the very end. The word CONTEST, written in bold next a Fearless-era Taylor Swift immediately caught my attention. I kicked Maddie away and read the description aloud. The contest’s instructions were clear: in a heartfelt letter, explain why you love Taylor Swift, and why winning a one-of-a-kind signed Taylor guitar would change your life. Ok, it didn’t say that exactly. But it was something along the lines of proving your status as Taylor’s #1 fan. So I did. I used the last card, envelope, and stamp I had to write a beautiful, tear-jerking letter to Tiger Beat (much to the confusion of my parents, who I never wrote to again). I topped the letter off with some unicorn stickers, slipped it into the camp mailbox, and enjoyed the rest of my summer. About 8 weeks later, my mom called me frantic about a mysterious and large package addressed to me from California. “What did you BUY???” she said, yelling into the phone. For ten minutes, I kept assuring her that I didn’t buy anything. Then it clicked: THE TAYLOR SWIFT GUITAR!!!!! I was sooooo beyond ecstatic, I’d never won anything in my life. Ever since that fateful day, the beautifulll Taylor guitar has been kept in pristine condition. Everyone in my family was terrified of touching it. I never thought I’d sell it—but, 10 years later, I’m using it to jumpstart my adult life. I recently graduated college and am moving to Seattle to begin my career :) But of course, selling this perfect baby has no bearing on my love for Tayor Swift. If anything, it makes me love her even more!
