Description
Up for sale is a decades old
vintage computer accessory,
which is a bit of an oddball
if not archaic vestigial
piece of computer history.
The item is a vintage
The First Touch 9250
Keyboard Strip by 3M,
which still includes
most of its original
packaging, however,
most of that has been
torn open; but the item
itself seems to have
either never been used
or probably used very
briefly back in the day.
What this item is
is basically an anti-
static/electromagnetic
grounding shield for
vintage keyboards;
not that they needed
it or anything but it
just seems like a
foregone snake oil
product from back
in the eighties.
Please note that I
cannot find a specific
date of manufacture
for this product since
there isn't a year
printed anywhere
on the paper thin
backing that the
item came housed in.
The strip itself still
seems to have the
original peel back
plastic cover on its
adhesive backing;
thus indicating that
it was probably never
used, but only taken
out of its original
packaging as
previously stated.
This paper thin
product backing
has yellowed heavily
over the years and
there is quite a
notable amount of
wear and tear on it.
The warranty card
is also included as it
was never filled out,
but that card was
ripped out of the
rest of the backing's
perforation. Perhaps
since we never
actually got around
to using it back in
the day, we simply
didn't see the point
in filling out the
warranty info.
Either way, the item
seems to be complete;
for what it's worth.
I really can't vouch
for how effective
the actual grounding
strip is against
electrostatic shock
since the instructions
call for the grounding
lug to be placed directly
on a wall outlet; which
seems a bit impractical
in this day and age.
But either way, I
personally consider
this item to be an
oddball piece of
peripheral computer
equipment history, so
there may just be a
place for it somewhere
among the retro
computing community.
